- Rust Lord is an homage to the Marvel superhero Star-Lord as portrayed in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie franchise, who makes a living by salvaging items and selling them for profit.[1]
- Rust Lord wears a pin on his shirt with the logo for Unreal Engine, the game engine used in Fortnite.
- The name of the skin could be a reference to Lord Rust, a character in the Discworld books.
- It is believed that Rust Lord could possibly be the Renegade Raider duo on the basis that they are both part of the Storm Scavenger set.
